Similar to Storm Claudia hit the northwest the previous evening, the home side swept Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their title credentials as they reinforced their place at the top of the table.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This scoreline represented successive league defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s ability to juggle domestic and European soccer with a small roster has been a frequently analyzed subject since they earned a place in the Champions League. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the week that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared weary all game, the historic win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of changes. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading worries. Jeglertz made one change from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

United had several sorties forwards, their direct style giving them choices in the wings but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. City, meanwhile, dominated possession, teasing their opponents and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Goals Galore

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th headed goal of the campaign.

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to maraud through the middle from defense, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The key Casparij received possession on the right before sending a precise low cross for Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any team who finished above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against Arsenal and United to position them in a favorable situation after nine games.
